What is an Ophthalmologist

Donald J. Digby, MD, FACS, FAAO

Don Digby, M.D. a native of Atlanta, Georgia is a corneal fellowship trained ophthalmologist who moved his practice to Greensboro, NC in 1984. His practice focuses on anterior segment surgery and medical ophthalmology. He was one of the first surgeons in the country providing true laser cataract surgery using the LenSx Laser.  LenSx cataract surgery is recognized as revolutionary in the technology of cataract surgery and astigmatism correction. Medically, he focuses on the management of glaucoma and diabetic eye disease as well as routine eye care. Dr. Digby is one of the most experienced surgeons in the nation in the implantation of the ReStor Multifocal Lens implants for correction of cataracts and the aging eye (presbyopia). He is also a leader in astigmatism correction using both the laser and specialized Toric lenses.

A “Georgia Bulldog” and graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, Dr. Digby completed his internship and residency in Ophthalmology at the Naval Regional Medical Center San Diego and served as Chief of Ophthalmology at Naval Regional Medical Center in Guam. He completed his Cornea and Anterior Segment Surgery Fellowship at the Hallum-Arnold Foundation in Atlanta Georgia.

He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the International Society of Refractive Surgeons. Dr. Digby is also involved in state and local professional organizations having served as both Secretary and Legislative Liaison for the Executive Board of the Greater Greensboro Society of Medicine. He is an active member of the NC Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Digby is a frequent lecturer to his peers within the medical community and has served as a consultant to numerous manufacturers within eye care.

In addition, he established Digby Eye Associates as a teaching site for Family Practice and Internal Medicine residents of the UNC-Moses Cone residency program and was named Adjunct Associate Professor for the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Previously, he also held an adjunct clinical associate professor position in the Dept of Ophthalmology Duke University School of Medicine.

Dr. Digby founded Digby Eye Associates in 1988 with a vision that remains today — combine the staff’s unique qualifications of world-class experience to provide the best possible eye care in an environment of friendship and compassion. Dr. Digby insists on continued medical education for all levels of the staff, which continues to distinguish Digby Eye Associates as a practice on the cutting edge of advancements in well eye care and medical and surgical treatments.

Dr. Digby is married and he and his wife, Marti spend precious free time with their five children and eight grandchildren and their extended family. An avid sportsman, Dr. Digby is likely to be found with a fishing pole or golf club in his hand. He is a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.

J. Suzanne Parker-Greensboro, NC

J. Suzanne Parker, OD, FAAO

Dr. Parker joined Digby Eye Associates in 2008. She is a North Carolina native and graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with minors in Chemisty and Spanish. She then attended Pennsylvania College of Optometry, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Optical Sciences and Doctorate of Optometry degrees. She completed her residency in Ocular Disease at the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and gained extensive experience in the areas of retina, glaucoma, cornea and neuro-ophthalmology.

Dr. Parker is committed to providing comprehensive eye care services to a broad range of patients, including contact lens wearers, and she is fluent in Spanish. She is proficient in fitting the latest technologically advanced contact lenses on both healthy eyes and also those with complicated conditions such as keratoconus, post-surgical and traumatized corneas.

In 2008, Dr. Parker became a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. She is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Scleral Lens Education Society, and the Contact Lens, Cornea, and Sports Vision sections of the AOA. Since 2008, she has served as the President of the Triad District of the North Carolina State Optometric Society. She serves on the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina State Optometric Society and in 2013 she was recognized as North Carolina’s Young Optometrist of the year.

She and her husband, Neill, and their two sons live in Greensboro and enjoy traveling, the culinary and fine arts, and are avid followers of their alumni sports teams. She has a special interest in the Impressionist artists.
Niyati Patel-Greensboro, NC

Niyati Patel, OD, FAAO

Dr. Niyati Patel joined Digby Eye Associates in 2012 and is a native of North Carolina. She received her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She continued her training by completing a residency at W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury, NC. There she gained experience in diagnosing and treating various ocular diseases including cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration.

Dr. Patel is trained in fitting a wide variety of contact lenses, including specialty lenses for complex corneas. She also provides excellent primary eye care services.

Dr. Patel is an active member of the American Optometric Association, American Academy of Optometry, and the North Carolina State Optometric Society. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, outdoor activities, and spending time with family and friends.
Erin M. Fontaine-Greensboro, NC

Erin M. Fontaine, OD, FAAO

Dr. Erin Fontaine joined Digby Eye Associates in 2014. She is a native of Raleigh, NC and a graduate of North Carolina State University where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry, Biological Sciences and Chemistry with a minor in Genetics. She then earned her Doctor of Optometry Degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She completed a residency at Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, SC where she gained experience in comprehensive eye care, diagnosing and managing ocular diseases and completing low vision exams.

At Digby Eye Associates Dr. Fontaine has continued to demonstrate her expertise in providing comprehensive eye care and in managing nearsightedness, farsightedness and presbyopia. She excels in fitting daily and extended wear contact lenses and with the latest technologically advanced lens designs, recommends the lens best suited for her patient’s lifestyle. She has expertise in diagnosing and managing cataracts and glaucoma. Dr. Fontaine regularly assists DEA surgeons with the post-operative management of their surgical cases.

In her free time Dr. Fontaine and her husband enjoy sporting events, outdoor activities and cooking.
Albert Lundquist-Greensboro, NC

Albert Lundquist, SA, PAC

Albert Lundquist, a Florida native, is a Surgeon Assistant and Physician Assistant who has lived and practiced in Greensboro since 1987. He received his undergraduate degree with double majors in Biology and Chemistry from Berry College near Rome, Georgia and completed his training at the University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Medicine and Allied Health Surgeon Assistant Program.

Mr. Lundquist has practiced in ophthalmic surgery and ophthalmology since 1984.  He was among the first PAs in the country to specialize in ophthalmology.  He is specifically trained in surgery and is also certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. He has demonstrated his dedication to providing quality care through constant medical education and has completed his national Physician Assistant certification exam every 6 years.

Albert is married, and he and his wife, Julie, enjoy spending time with their two grown children and traveling. With a love of being outdoors, his passions include watching the 22 species of wild birds he attracts, houses and feeds, including hand feeding live meal worms to Eastern bluebird parents for them to feed to their hatchlings and fledglings. Albert also enjoys fly fishing in North Carolina mountain streams and has been learning to tie his own flies. His other outdoor hobbies include yard work and landscape and vegetable gardening, and his favorite indoor pass-time is baking luscious cheesecakes.
